Global GirlfriendShop with a Cause: Free A Child Allies with Global Girlfriend
By Jenn Weede

Every choice make is a reflection of our values. What if you could make a difference in the world with the next bar of soap you bought? The next cup of coffee you drank? The next birthday gift you bought? Or just the handbag you carry every day? Free A Child has joined forces with Global Girlfriend to bringing you unique, quality merchandise that supports women and low-income communities worldwide.

Global Girlfriend is a unique fair-trade boutique selling specialty hand-made gifts and goods made by women's non-profit programs, women's cooperatives worldwide and products that benefit women's human rights. Their hand-selected products really make a difference. On November 18, a generous host held the third Free A Child benefit Global Girlfriend party, from which 15 percent of the proceeds were donated to Free A Child. Global Girlfriend also offered gift bags and wrapping paper made by women who are a part of Free A Child's Nepal micro loan program. All of the proceeds from gift bag and wrapping paper purchases were donated to Free A Child.

Those unable to attend can support Free A Child by purchasing items directly from the Global Girlfriend website (www.globalgirlfriend.com) and mentioning “Free A Child” in the comments section of the order form.

Global GirlfriendAccording to a report of the UN Expert Group on Women & Finance, worldwide most poor people are women and most women are poor. Almost all low-income women are economically active as micro entrepreneurs and self-employed in the informal sector. The major economic roles of low-income women producers are often undervalued and ignored. Women comprise a third of the official labor force, yet do two-thirds of the world's work; they earn one-tenth of its income and own one-hundredth of its property (ILO).

Many women worldwide try desperately to make a living selling their artisan-quality handicrafts but find that they have little access to market opportunities. Through fair-trade practices Global Girlfriend brings the works of these disadvantaged artisans to Americans. Using your valuable purchasing power helps women and children worldwide, including The Women's Bean Project of Denver, The Enterprising Kitchen of Chicago, The Gathering Place of Denver, Rosie's Place of Boston, WomenCraft of Chicago, The Gemini Trust of Ethiopia, Aid Through Trade, and now Free A Child.
